The most important way in which the Planning Department measures residential opinions about a development is through the individually written letters that they receive. About 150 letters of objection were received in connection with the first application and about 130 for the second. There is no doubt that this was a very effective demonstration of residential opposition to the Try Homes proposals.
Both applications were rejected by the SDC although in each case Try Homes appealed to the Government's Planning Inspectorate on the grounds of "non determination" (i.e. because they had not received an acceptance/refusal within 13 weeks of making their application). The appeal on the first application was eventually withdrawn and the Public Inquiry on the second application was held in June 2007.
